Newer work #106

Golden Sunset is not only called that because of its color but because I created it during a Golden Paints seminar in which we were given samples of a bunch of different paints and textures and encouraged to play with them in a guided creation that showed different ways to use most of the products.

Inevitably I worked on it further once I got home!

1439goldensunset_w

#1439 Golden Sunset.  Mixed media on canvas panel. 20×16″ $200.

Newer work #103

This is another in the series on reclaimed panels.  There will be quite a few of these as my friend and I had a very successful dumpster diving session a couple months back.

1433wavinggoodmorning_w

#1433 Waving good morning. Mixed media on panel, 18×10. $180.
The following is written for and painted into the painting:
Our sun warms our world
Atmosphere heats and rises
waving good morning.

Newer work #102

Every day you get a chance to start over….

1432joyofnewness_wpoem_w

#1432 “Joy of newness”, mixed media on panel 18×10. $180.

I just wondered whether I’ve now written more haiku than sonnets….

Newer work #101

This is on one of the panels I cut when at my friend John Weidenhamer’s place (he has a great workshop) from some upcycled  kitchen panels.

1431chameleonsky_w

#1431 Chameleon Sky. Mixed Media, on solid panel, 30×15″. $250.
Contains the poem:
Chameleon Sky
Protects us from space’s harm
and colors our souls

Newer work #100

This painting was done in a different way than the majority of my mixed media pieces.  Although I had the two (yes, just two) pieces leftover from a cut, it was enough.  Then I cut the panel specifically to fit the art I was going to make (usually the panel is a separate inspiration), and then I painted the underlying acrylic first – to work with the clouds cut-out before I put the watercolor part on.  Then the poetry.

1429soulshape_wpoem_w

#1429 Soul Shape. 27×5″ mixed media on solid panel.  $135.

It’s easier to figure out what it looks like when you can see it on a wall.

La Mirada talk and demo

Last week I went to the monthly meeting of the La Mirada Art Club to talk about my work and demonstrate part of my process for them.  I was fortunate that one of the members agreed to take some pics of me working while I was assembling the refractured watercolor.

1setup

Here’s the empty room, just when I’d set up.

2lowersky

After having watched me brutally hack up my painting, I start by assembling the horizon.

3apatchofblue

I usually am looking at the sky the ‘right way up’…..

…and I usually start with the top of the sky….

Now it’ starting to come together.

6closetodone

Sliding some deeper blue under other pieces.

Well folks, that’s all we have time for tonight.

8whatidid

This is the layout that I created at the demo, but I just picked up the pieces without marking their places.

This is the final product

The poem in it reads:

Dawn leaves me speechless

These gold and turquoise jewels

precious beyond words.

29 Palms Membership show

Last weekend I was at the 29 Palms Art Gallery pretty much all weekend.  On the Saturday we had an art fair during the day and in the evening was the reception for the Membership Show, which was a judged show.

29pM2020-1

Some of the Artwork in the Main Gallery

29pM2020-2

Sometimes I had to wait until the people moved around.

29pM2020-3

There just wasn’t a good angle on this one for the camera.

29pM2020-4

The Pickering Gallery had a nice selection.  As I was looking around the show early in the morning, I was approached by someone who wanted to buy one of the artworks in there.

29pM2020-5

There was quite a bit of 3-D art.  This one won a ribbon.

29pM2020-6

The West gallery contained something familiar.  Again, I was struggling with glare…

29pM2020-7

I’d seen David’s work before and it was good to finally meet him because he had a booth at the fair that day.

29pM2020-8

On Sunday my co-worker at the gallery was Miri, whose painting is on the left here.  She is also a singer and sang at the reception when I had my first show at the Glass Outhouse Gallery a couple years ago.  I have a CD of hers.

29pM2020-9

Earlier in the month I’d encourage Tim to create something to enter the show.  He won best of show!

Posting my monthly newsletter promptly seems to be a good item to have on the New Year’s Resolution list.

Collage Artists of America Membership Show

The Collage Artists of America membership show, “Just your Imagination” was held at the San Fernando Valley Arts and Cultural Center.  The show runs Sept 4-29th and the reception was on Sept 7th.  As part of my contribution to the show, I sat in the gallery on the afternoon before the reception.  It was quite during much of the afternoon though there were several families turned up with kids to have an art lesson.

I had forgotten my kindle so I had plenty of time to enjoy the exhibit in detail.

My entry was right next to the front door!

Assemblage is allowed, so we have sculpture too.

My show favorite is on the left there. I also serendipitously met with a friend who came to see the show, and this was her favorite too. It did not win an award.

A lot of figurative and portrait work.

I did like the tree piece and the one on the right, which also contained a tree.

The large green creation near to us took second place. My pic of the winner did not come out well, sorry.

I talked to this lady at length as we were the only ones in the gallery early on.

Loved the piece on the right, though I felt it was more painting than collage.

Great crowd at the reception!  I still didn’t win an award….

Newer work #88

Haven’t posted newer work in a while.  This is one of a series of smaller paintings on panel that have needed to work on to replace sold work.  (Darn, could use selling a few of the larger ones, I’m battling the balance between inspirations for larger pieces vs. storage space….)

Mixed media painting

#1398 Snowbirds. 9×12″ refractured watercolor and poetry on gallery-wrap panel. Poem written for and into painting is: Summer into fall we fly to our other home winter into spring
