Watercolor collage painting

#1283 Jump for Joy. Watercolor collage 5×3.5″ in 7×5″ mat. $25.

It’s been such a dry year for sales, I’ve not needed to create too much.  Nevertheless sometimes I just can’t hold back.  Thought I’d do a batch of small impulse-purchase sized works at $25 a pop.  Indeed there were a couple of impulses succumbed to in the last couple shows.  Here are a few of the ones that haven’t quite impulsed people yet.

I’m having as much fun with the titles as the collages.

Mixed media painting

#1271 Night watch. Mixed media on solid pine panel, 14×24″. $250.

This is the last of the current batch of cloud-shaped paintings  Theoretically the shape is great for a kids room, but not necessarily the poem written in it, if you want your child to ever sleep:

Night Watch
Stars between clouds
a night to stay up and watch
until the sun rises.

Solo Show for August

JeniBateVanguardAug2017-1_wOne of the things that didn’t get on camera when I was taking photos of my Paint-the-night class was that earlier in the afternoon Rick (Rick Archer, President of Moreno Valley Cultural Arts Foundation and Vanguard Gallery) and I had hung up a 14-painting solo show on the left wall.

JeniBateVanguardAug2017-2_w<Sigh> this is by far the first time that I have put up a solo show and promptly forgotten to take any photos of it.   Senior moment!

JeniBateVanguardAug2017-3_wBlissfully I was passing not far from the gallery on Monday morning and (seeing as I’m on the advisory committee and one of the tutors and I have a key to the gallery) stopped in to rectify this.  The show will be up through August and there will be a reception on August 19th, 7-8pm.  Rick should have the labels up by then!  Actually many of these are available through my Etsy store at the moment (though it might take a little longer than promised to ship….).

Newer work #74

Thought I was going to sell this one over the weekend at Flagstaff, but it didn’t happen.  Anyway, happy 4th of July everyone, even if you’re not somewhere that’s celebrating Independence Day.  When I started creating this painting it wasn’t especially intended to be a 4th-of-July painting, but after I got the stars down, it spoke to me that this is what it wanted to be.  And like the fact that the shape resembles the triangularly folded flag.  The poem on it is:

The fourth of July
stars bursting against the night
and raining color.

Falling between the cracks in cyberspace

….. there went the link.  The link to the actual youtube video.  No, I have no idea what happened in the mailchimp world, but here is the actual functional video link!

“How do you do it?”

Here’s a link to my monthly newsletter.  I’ve been waiting to put this subject out there for a while, as you’ll see if you follow the links……..

Mixed media painting

Nebula I. Mixed media painting on panel. Refractured watercolor, acrylic. 11×14″. $180.

This one is a sibling of Night Storm II – same refractured watercolor, I probably painted it with some of the same acrylics on the palette, but an utterly different shape and feel.  I’ve named it Nebula I because I like it so much I’m sure there will be a Nebula II at some point.  This one could truly be hung any way up, as long as you don’t mind the direction of the signature.

#1260 Nightstorm II. Mixed media on shaped solid pine panel, 24×11″. $250.

Here’s another foray into differently shaped canvases.  A very abstract piece for that slender space that just needs a pop of color.  However despite looking quite narrow, the curve means the panel is actually 11″ wide.  This is one of three ‘siblings’ made from a single 18×24″ watercolor of a starfield, but presented as a dark swirling storm.

Mixed media skyscape painting

#1258 Reaching. Mixed media on panel, 14×11″ $180.

Here is one where I went kind of outside the bounds of color combinations that the sky and clouds actually do.  I named it “Reaching” because I felt that the red cloud was reaching up and out of the painting.  Now that I revisit this, I see things that I did not intend to put in this painting.  What do you see in it?

Artwork at High Desert Medical Center

Refractured watercolor painting

#583 Sea Crest Dawn #33. Refractured watercolor on panel, 24×18″. $540.

On Friday I attended the reception for the group show at the High Desert Medical Center in Joshua Tree, California.  There are four other artists in the show, Charlie Schwartz, Sharon Matheson, Nichole Vikdal and Darlene H. Morris.  One of the interesting tidbits about this show is that they have an online store for this art, and you can click to purchase!  The downside is you cannot take the art away until the show is over at the end of July.  Oh well, anticipation can be a good thing!

We had a few snacks served and then Darlene gave the group the guided tour and we each gave a little talk about our work being shown, though Charlie wasn’t present.  Then we had an extra little celebration because Darlene is handing over the reins (no pun intended) to Raini who will be curating the shows for the foreseeable future.  This involved a cake, which had one of her paintings printed on the frosting!  Is there no limit to where you can put artwork?

If you’re in the area between now and the end of July, take a few minutes to walk through and see the work – there are brochures available throughout with information about it.
