Chaparral Artists Judged Show

I was blessed with the help from a friend from Chaparral Artists – Nancy Miehle, who offered to take work in for me to the show, to save me a trip last week. Last Saturday I had been gallery sitting at 29Palms Art Gallery and on the way home stopped at Rainbow Stew to see the Chaparral Artists‘ judged show, that Rainbow Stew hosts in the central gallery. There were three categories “The Hand of Man”, “Nature’s Kaleidoscope” and “Beautiful Creatures”. It wasn’t a huge show, but I was delighted to find that both Nancy and I had won ribbons!

Glass Outhouse Gallery – ‘Fleeting Passions’

A few years ago I was introduced to the Glass Outhouse Gallery in Wonder Valley – just east of 29 Palms.  It is in the middle of nowhere, even more than I am, and has a small gallery where Laurel and Howard hold month-long 2-artist shows, and a sculpture garden made of recycled material art, created by Howard.

I had a show there a few years ago with my Mixed Media work and am scheduled to have another show there with that medium in January 2021.  Yes, artists do plan ahead.

The cart shows that this is a hanging day.

As I have another body of work and enough Mixed Media to run two shows concurrently, I’m on their ‘waitlist’.  A list of artists who, in an emergency can put together a show in a couple days.  Last week I got the call.

The outgoing artist hadn’t picked up her work yet.

I had planned to take my oils and acrylics to the show in Monrovia this weekend, but with a quick call I managed to get that changed and this body of work was available for the month.

My fellow artist is Tami Wood.  We both joked that our names are two four-letter words.  Her work is made exclusively of recycled materials.  We’ve called our show ‘Fleeting Passions’ because we both explore ephemeral aspects of our environment.

And room for the bin, that holds paintings I did in or for paint and wine evenings that I’ve taught.

After the show in Newport I brought everything up and hung the show.  Howard will pin up the prices later.

I’m surprised the one on the left hadn’t sold at Newport, it had a lot of interest.

Because of existing commitments (Monrovia), I can’t be at the reception but Tami will handle that and I’ll do my share of gallery sitting during the month.

The painting on the right is one from my house – I’m down to the last few oils and acrylics and am selling at discount prices!

What I didn’t realize until I told another friend in 29 Palms about the late arrangement, I’d scored a show during the Highway 62 Art Tour – three of the four weekends in October, and the Glass Outhouse Gallery is one of the stops.  Wow, I’m sure glad I decided to go for it!

Almost exactly the right amount of space, there was only one suitable painting I didn’t put up!

I feel bless that because of various issues outside of my scope, I now have a show with both bodies of work on the Highway 62 tour – I have Mixed Media work at the High Desert Medical Center!

Yucca Valley Presbyterian

This is the second time I’ve had the pleasure of showing work at the Yucca Valley Presbyterian Church.  My mixed media paintings will be in the small meeting room and in the sanctuary during all of September.

Kim Clements is the curator, and Nancy Miehle of the Chaparral Artist was there and helped me set up the show.  While I was there I smelled gas coming from the stove in the kitchen.  The handyman was summoned and we could feel and hear that the oven was on a little, so he shut the gas off at the mains because we couldn’t move the huge stove to look for the leak.  Hopefully I’ve staved off a disaster.

Yucca Valley Presbyterian Church

I’m always open to shows in unusual spaces.  I had the opportunity to show work in this church and had a silly thing happen when I went to set it up.  I had agreed to meet one of the deacons, David, at 9am on the appointed day.

I arrived with 10 minutes to spare, so parked in the parking lot and got out and went round the church and confirmed he was not there – all doors were locked and mine was the only vehicle in the lot.  So I waited.  And waited.

Half an hour later I started to get concerned so I called him.  It turned out he had approached the church from the other side, parked round the corner where I couldn’t see his truck, didn’t look to see if I was in the main parking lot, unlocked the church and was also waiting patiently but beginning to get a little concerned.  Oh well.  But then we had a bit of a rush as I had to be elsewhere later, and I forgot to take photos of the setup.

Yesterday, Doug and I went to the church service – it being the only Sunday during my show that I wasn’t at a show.  Now I get to show you the show.  I got to meet a lot of people, talked about the possibility of teaching some classes at their location, and once again, I forgot to take pics of the two in the sanctuary.

A new venue.

Yesterday I met up with my friend Michael who had moved to Yucca Valley.  Hadn’t seen him in quite a few years.  He had met his now-wife Ester the month after I had a show at his small gallery in Crestline, which he no longer has.  We met up at Rainbow Stew where he is currently displaying photos from a photo project about a village in Colombia.  After we spent a while in the local cafe catching up on the intervening years, I popped back into Rainbow Stew and asked if they thought they might like to run some of my books and original cards – and they said yes!  So, I have another outlet for a couple of things.  Woohoo.  Not bad for a Monday.
