I’ve been rather remiss about posting newer works. This one is not-newer enough to have been hanging in the BAI before I got to posting it. I’ve been posting more on Instagram (#skyscapesforthesoul), but would like to post more consistently across platforms. If anyone has a great recommendation for a tool to allow you to do this, I’m all ears. I’ve heard of ‘hootsuite’, but would rather have a one-time purchase than a monthly subscription that they’re asking for.
I was pleased that working virtually meant I was able to enter the Women Painters West show ‘Hope Springs Eternal‘. And…. well you know those robo calls that we’ve all started getting again? I’m glad I picked up one with an LA area code whose number I didn’t recognize, because I was being congratulated for winning third place in show with one of my entries, Hope Rising. I’d had an interesting exchange with the lady who’d been setting up the virtual show, because I’d mentioned that my work has poetry in it and she was trying to find a way to best show this.
Then when I looked at the show link, I noticed something – I’d sent the wrong image for the other painting. Nevertheless, the one I’d sent was on theme so I emailed and explained what I’d done, and asked to change the name of the painting. There was a flurry of misunderstood emails where the lady thought it was the painting that had one. At the moment of writing, it looks like ‘Rising Together’ (the name is now corrected) won third prize, it was actually ‘Hope Rising’. Perhaps it will be fixed by the time you look at this! I hope so!
Last night my friend Bob and I went to the Women in Art event at the Carmen Durazo Cultural Center in Calexico. I had a half dozen paintings in the show, and had brought some items from my gallerist Alana of sm’Art Studio in La Quinta.
An interesting item for me is that I had never seen ‘A Week in Politics III‘ hung on a wall. I’d seen it in the booth but had never gone to the lengths of putting 7 nails in the wall at home to display it, so this was a treat.

When I went to take a photo of the display, a couple ladies were having their photo taken in front of it. I later spoke to one of them – Monica Lepe-Negrete, who it turns out is running for Superior Court Judge. She loved the serendipity of her choice of background once I’d told her the story behind the artwork.

The reception was a joint reception with the Chamber of Commerce and we got to meet several business owners. There were three short speeches given by local business people and community members about the importance of women’s history in the world and the community, and also of empowering the next generation of women to achieve what they are capable of.
