Another nice little surprise

Yesterday I went to pick up my paintings from the Imperial County Fair.  I often enter about 10 paintings but this year only had four that fit the categories well (you can only enter two in each category).  I was pleasantly surprised to find that ‘Arrows‘ had won 3rd place in “Non-objective or abstract paintings, any media”, and “Hope Rising” had taken 1st place in the same category.

Following the county fair, one of our local museums, Pioneer’s Museum, hosts the first and second place winners in each category, so I had to run off to drop Hope Rising at its next venue.  My good friend Ginger Ryerson who curates the art wall there and the art shows was there for the intake.  Hope Rising is a heavier piece so I helped her hang it.

Indio Senior Center Solo Show

I have a solo show at the Indio Senior Center for the month of November.  You can drop by and see it even if you’re not a senior!  It’s on the wall of the hallway to the left of the reception desk.

La Quinta Museum show

Last night I went to the reception for the La Quinta Museum suprise show ‘Local Color’.  This show happened because the planned show of Generation Z artwork and musings turned out to be a much physically smaller show than anticipated and the museum suddenly had a lot of bare walls.  A little social media work to local artists to bring in a piece first come first served quickly fixed the problem.

The lady in the black dress bottom left is Alana – the gallery owner at sm’Art studio in La Quinta. Finally caught her on camera!  Behind her is Michael Angelo (Hernandez) who also sells work there.  Yes, my work hangs next to that of MichaelAngelo!

Nice of the museum to paint that floating wall to match my painting. Shame about them not putting up the sign I gave them that wrote out the Shakespearean sonnet written for and painted into the painting.

 

Newer work #85

First of three.  These were painted together – small panels that would fit between doors in a hallway.  However, I’ve hung them together in the booth and some people have considered they would make a nice triptych.

Hermosa Beach

Saturday night’s reception was quite a change from the previous night in Temecula.  It was the hopping place to be.  We had about 30 artists showing work and a lot of supporters.  The theme of the show was ‘Indivisible’.  Rafael McMaster, our leader at Hermosa Beach Artist Collective had designed a logo to embody this:  Create a division sign, then put an x through it.  There were a couple blank canvases on the wall next to the door and everyone was encouraged to ‘make their mark’!

Despite the quality of the artwork, I think I was the only artist whose artwork embodied the theme of the show.  Not sure if it was good or bad that a couple people commented that they thought my painting, behind the desk which functions as the bar during receptions, was the logo for the show.  Hmm.  Comments encouraged.  One of the things that I like about my painting, “One Side“, originally designed for entry into a competition on art to promote world peace, is that I could photoshop the saying in any language for reproductions.

Yucca Valley Presbyterian

This is the second time I’ve had the pleasure of showing work at the Yucca Valley Presbyterian Church.  My mixed media paintings will be in the small meeting room and in the sanctuary during all of September.

Kim Clements is the curator, and Nancy Miehle of the Chaparral Artist was there and helped me set up the show.  While I was there I smelled gas coming from the stove in the kitchen.  The handyman was summoned and we could feel and hear that the oven was on a little, so he shut the gas off at the mains because we couldn’t move the huge stove to look for the leak.  Hopefully I’ve staved off a disaster.

A place among the winners – follow up

Last month I shared that I had some of my work accepted into the ‘Seascapes’ show with an online gallery in the UK, and that they were going to create a little video of the winners, showing their art as it would look on a wall.  Well, HERE it is!

One of the advantages about online showcases is that the work doesn’t have to be available, and the particular painting that is in the video went to its forever home some time ago.  One of the disadvantages, I guess, of having someone mock-up the video is that the painting is depicted much larger than it actually is.  Oh well!

Monthly newsletter

Well, I guess I must be getting old because when I came to schedule the posting of September’s newsletter, I discovered I’d forgotten to post August’s newsletter to WordPress.  So if you only follow me on WordPress you get a double header.  If you follow me on Facebook or Twitter, you get a repeat!

Newer Work #84

I am usually willing to do commissions that will not be chosen.  I often do a couple of commissions when making a refractured watercolor or mixed media because if it doesn’t it the spot, it can just go into show stock and someone else will love it.

Just Chillin’ II started as a commission and the potential customer didn’t fall in love with it – in part because it wasn’t going to look good in the house because the wall colors weren’t conducive.  So, another 16×20″ matted painting is in the bin this weekend.
