The ‘technical’ names for clouds are, like much of our technical things in English, based on Latin. Cumulus clouds are named that way because they are ‘heaped up’ and cumulus is the Latin for ‘heap’. That word is also the basis for the word ‘accumulations’.
Luke Howard – now there’s someone who spent much of his life with his head in the clouds and many of the clouds were classified and given names by him. As these little clouds are shaped like our favorite fair-weather cumulus, I thought I would name the painting ‘Accumulations’.
